From Mr. Cooper
HS band and choir director

There are many ways a young performing artist can explore the beauty of music, and my philosophy is
to encourage the personal expression and character of each of my students.  Backed by solid technical
studies, our music department explores genres, style periods, abstract,  humorous,  dramatic,
programmatic,  and popular literature.

Our daily performance courses emphasize personal skill development,  and team work as an ensemble
member.  Laughter and joy is as important as focus, intensity,  and hard work.  Our students richly
invest many hours in learning to perform well together and for others.

Competition has it’s place, but at the extreme top of my list is to educate the music student in a manner
that prepares them for an adult life richly immersed in personal confidence, social skills, quality
relationships, details,  personal management,  and creativity in all aspects of their adult experiences.  I
encourage you to attend student concerts and sports entertainment engagements throughout the year.
Encourage our students with your participation in concessions, association events,  and positive
conversation.

Support your son or daughter by maintaining a quality instrument (including the voice) and helping them
achieve greater skills through private lessons, attendance of local performances,  and contributing to
music libraries on their ipods.

The La Center schools have the blessing of being richly immersed in the arts.   It makes a difference in
the quality of youth we graduate.  Join me this year in empowering our fine musicians to become the
best they can be….
